Prompts

  1. In 1861, the Pony Express first delivered letters from New York to California. Riders with the Pony Express were generally young men with no ties, orphans preferred, because it was arduous and sometimes dangerous work, carrying mail across the Wild West. Write a story about a Pony Express rider.
  2. Every exit is an entrance to somewhere else.” Tom Stoppard
  3. One of the guardian angels who presides over this day is Nelchael. He is a fallen angel who teaches mathematics, astronomy and geography to demons in hell. Write a story set in a training school for demons, or angels if you prefer. What happens when the two schools play each other at sport? Or if the cosmic economy forces them to merge?
  4. Disobedience Day is a day for civil disobedience or protest. Your character is taking part in a protest.
  5. Build a Scarecrow Day occurs about now. Write a story featuring a scarecrow.

  • Enjoy studying and are good at it, thanks to their good memories.
  • May be a child prodigy, and/or be aware of their vocation from an early age.
  • Keep up with modern technology and may be ahead of their time.
  • They may become victims of crime, commit a crime, or suffer a tragic circumstance late in life, such as a bereavement and/or being affected by cancer. May be affected by poisons.
  • Possible taste for the gruesome, dark and macabre. Likely to be night people with a dark sense of humour.
  • May have an affinity for owls, possibly collecting them.
  • Prefer to work alone and are not especially sociable.
  • Careers might include science, literature, philosophy or the arts. They may work with chemicals, or work in the development of services, products or skills. Construction or engineering are also possible.
  • Badly affected by any disturbance in their peace and quiet.
  • Artistic works they produce will be detailed and delicate.
  • Will look forward to escaping the daily grind and will be concerned about providing for their retirement. However, retirement is often a disappointment when they get there.
