Prompts

  1. A fine lace handkerchief.

  3. In 1860 the tightrope walker Blondin crossed Niagara Falls on a tightrope. In 1974, Evel Kenevil failed a jump across a canyon. Write about a tightrope walker or motorcyclist planning a daring stunt.
  4. It's Pardon Day. Your character seeks a pardon for an old crime. What do they have to do before it is granted?
  5. Today is celebrated as the birthday of Yemaya, Aruba goddess of the sea, often depicted as a mermaid. She is patron of shipwreck survivors, her number is seven and her colours are blue, white and silver. Write a story featuring this goddess and/or those who worship her.

Character Traits
  • Likely to be proud and arrogant, possibly because of their lineage or social rank, but equally could be pride in themselves.
  • Hedonistic and fond of home comforts.
  • Fussy and cantankerous, which can make them seem older than they are.
  • Tend to be wary and mistrustful.
  • They can be selfish and miserly, but they could also be generous and giving.
  • Willing to work when necessary but see little point in work for work's sake. Once they have achieved financial security they are happy to delegate!
  • Have a lively imagination.
  • Enjoy travel - may need to travel for their health.
  • Have an interest in philosophy but tend to be sceptical.
  • Have an awareness of public superstitions or weaknesses which could be turned into profit - would make a good con man.
  • Alternatively, if religious, they have a talent for communicating divine truths to others and would make good ministers.
  • Tendency to worry and suppress emotions which is bad for their health.
  • Unforeseen trouble in their lives could come from natural disasters, in particular hurricanes, volcanoes and earthquakes.
