A Year of Writing Prompts; 11 October

How to use these prompts

What might these two people be saying to each other?
What might the geyser mean, or have meant, to the people
living nearby?

Prompts

  1. "It is not fair to ask of others what you are not willing to do yourself." Eleanor Roosevelt
  2. It's Coming Out Day. Your character is either gay, lesbian or transgender - what happens when they come out to their family or friends (or even themselves)?
  3. An alternative take on Coming Out Day - your character has to tell their family that they've rejected some family tradition or philosophy. An example might be a character raised in a vegan family having to admit they like meat; a character who has converted to a new religion; the son/daughter of a pair of renowned scientists who wants to be an artist. You get the idea. Use one of these examples or think of one of your own.
  4. It's My Party (and I'll Cry if I Want To).
  5. "Just say no."

Character Names
Silva, Brigitta, Zina, Kira, Kirk, Emil, Kenneth, Valentina

Character Traits
  • Likely to be deeply religious and to enjoy the protection of a religious figure. Alternatively they may treat their political leanings or their work like a religion. Their religion could also become their work, as clergy is one possible career.
  • Other careers may be art, literature, science, electrician, public service or lawyer.
  • The support of a high ranking person will help them develop their talents and appear indispensable to others.
  • Likely to do a lot of charity work, helping the poor and needy.
  • There's a possibility they will take vows of celibacy or live lives of seclusion. If they do marry, they need an outlet for their active natures outside of the home.
  • Food is their weakness - there is a danger of over-indulging.
  • Art is another area where they may be tempted to be wasteful.
  • Alternate between extreme self-control and wastefulness.
  • Appreciate simple, natural beauty.
  • Generally lucky with money.
  • Can be distrustful of people from different faiths or backgrounds.
  • Dogmatism or restrictive rules can cause problems.
